The End Of A 9 Year (Twerking) Era

By: Rachel Galante

Could the blonde-wig wearing, 2006 Disney Channel, pop star inspiration Hannah Montana, be making a comeback and winning back her old fans? Miley Cyrus, the one with multiple identities- as seen from her TV days on Disney Channel and in real life- is, in fact, getting her original fans back on board. From childhood popstar to sparking controversy by swinging naked on a ball, Miley has finally returned to her sense of innocence which is exhibited in her new music video, “Malibu” shown on Youtube. She is regaining the popularity of old fans, including me, which can be seen in the 286 million Youtube views that “Malibu” now has. Miley has been changing back to her old, Disney Channel self.

If you really want to see the evolution of Miley, start on Youtube which makes all of this possible. Without Youtube you wouldn’t be able to see how Miley has proven you absolutely can come back from provocatively “twerking” on a married man in front of hundreds in the crowd as well as about 10.1 million watching on live television (her 2013 MTV VMA’s performance). The singer, who specializes in both country and pop music, has well proven from the timeline above that sometimes the road to finding and developing your true self is not always smooth. The Disney star’s career began in 2006 and was a figure for young girls all over the world to look up to.

You can find the start of her career by searching “Best of Both Worlds” or her first episode of Hannah Montana, “Lilly, Do You Want to Know a Secret?” on Youtube. These videos will lead you down a binge-worthy path of all her old videos and TV episodes from “Party in The USA” to “Wrecking Ball” and all the way up to her new album “Malibu”. If you want to see and believe her comeback, you have to start on Youtube in 2006 and work your way up to 2017 to see how she’s winning back her old fans and returning back to her old self.

Miley- or “Hannah”- demonstrated how to keep a good friendship, how to see if “He Could Be The One”, how to positively hide secrets from the whole world (of course), and how to tell the truth about who you really are. The TV series, Hannah Montana, portrayed Miley as an average high school girl by day and a pop star by night. The innocence of her looks and the way she acted resulting in craziness was shocking, but also was just another recap of 2007 shaved head, Britney Spears and 2011 drunken, arrested, fat Christina Aguilera. However, unbeknownst to most of the world, her risky period started during the Disney time with her promiscuous, almost naked photoshoot for Vanity Fair that was released in 2008. Soon after the shoot, things began to escalate.

The next stage of her wild journey is knowingly recognizable as the rise of the twerking era. Miley cut her long, beautiful hair short and dyed it bleach blonde. Her choice of clothing, style, dancing, music videos, and overall appearance changed the views of Miley- and Hannah Montana- fans all over the World. Was Miley ever going to be the same again, or is this who the role model most young girls looked up to had now become? For about three years, Miley showed the inner, more scandalous side of her during her early 20’s. Surprisingly, Miley seemed to maintain popularity, one might even say her crazy phase made her even more famous and well-liked than before.

Her current phase, which remains quite new to us, is also known as the ‘Malibu’ era.  Miley has begun to grow back out her brown roots but has kept the bleached blonde tips. This look almost makes it seem as if she’s half Miley, half Hannah. Her new music video on Youtube for Malibu can coincide with this as it begins with a feeling of light and happiness derived from the group of colorful balloons that leads to Miley running on a relaxed, peaceful looking beach. Throughout this video, a feeling of being home mixed with tranquility runs through your mind while all of the exotic and breathtaking settings Miley has been placed in a move by on the screen. Her smile alone makes it that much more powerful and this music video can prove in a numerous amount of ways that anything is possible. The light-hearted, fun, and old Miley is on her way back and change is noticeable as she even quotes in the song, “I never would’ve believed you if three years ago you told me I’d be here writing this song”. Nobody would’ve believed you either, Miley. However, Malibu proves that there is hope for everyone even when you don’t think you could ever be the way you once used to be.

I have to confess that I never would’ve thought Miley would come back around to her wholesome roots. Miley uses “Malibu” to prove all of the doubters, like me, wrong. As well as my roommate who can coincide with that, Gianna told me about how she remembers looking up to Hannah Montana and how she still listens to those old albums today. As she did first start to lose faith in Miley when she swung around naked to “Wrecking Ball”, she believes that she also made a comeback and thinks she will start listening to her new songs again because of the impact “Malibu” had on her.

You need to look back on this transformation even if you’ve already dropped her after her crazy Miley days. Starting from Best of Both Worlds in 2006 as shown on my timeline and every song since then, you need to go on to your Youtube account and get carried away back into your childhood, Hannah Montana days. When you get to “Malibu” you will see how this song illustrates her major comeback to the country singing, inspiring, Disney star, and above all, the old Miley who we’ve dearly missed. You can notice, as well, in “Malibu” the feeling of her country side again. It’s almost as though her music is changing back to her old ways as well.  Though Miley got bad reviews on her Malibu album, I’m still with her and excited to see what she does next. Maybe even a whole new country album. Her old fans will still appreciate her. This could be her biggest and best transformation of all time, not just for her, but for all of her fans who once, or still have looked up to her.
